Living Stones II: Building A Sound Future

The Compline Choir has offered a half-hour of calm contemplation in a divine acoustic for those gathered in person at Saint Mark’s Cathedral, tuning in to Classical KING, listening to the podcast, or viewing the cathedral’s livestream for nearly 70 years. Last year, the Choir’s prayers, music, and ministry touched some 16,831 people each week across the globe. The office of Compline is fundamental to the spiritual, mental, and physical wellbeing for those who listen and sing.

Did you know that all the singers are volunteers? Yet, the Choirs have regular operating costs like the website, podcast, vestments, music, insurance, and modest compensation for the 1/4-time Director, currently funded through 2026.Beyond that, future Director compensation is dependent on increasing the endowment fund. Cathedral leadership and governing bodies of the Compline Choir and Hallock Institute are fully committed to this endeavor and invite you to join in the cathedral’s $9 million Living Stones II: Building A Sound Future capital campaign.

As you explore details of the campaign, you’ll see that $500,000 directly supports The Compline Choir’s ministry, with

  • $250,000 of $1 million Music Endowments line item allocated toward the Director compensation endowment fund, and
  • $250,000 allocated toward the possible construction of Compline Choir stalls.

In addition, Saint Mark’s has received a pledge from world-renowned organ builder Paul Fritts gifting a new Renaissance-style organ to be sited above the Compline corner, that will provide opportunities for different repertoire and new sound combinations for the Compline Choir and other cathedral choirs, and allow for a second, distinctive organ from which to offer Organ by Night recitals after the office of Compline.

As of February 1, 2026, some 500 households have pledged $8.6 million. We now turn to the broader community as we seek to raise the remaining $1 million. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for you

  • the Compline Choirs’ listeners and attendees
  • the devotees of music and liturgy composed and crafted by Peter Hallock
  • and musicians and early music enthusiasts eager to preserve and enhance the sound palette cultivated at Saint Mark’s Cathedral

to join in Building a Sound Future.
